I love the cottage garden look that we do so well in England and no cottage garden worth its salt is without a Delphinium or two. I find them so joyful waving about in all their glory in bright summer sunshine. This dreamy watercolour "JOY" was inspired by these gorgeous summer flowers. I just kept seeing Delphiniums, everywhere I went and I bought some for my garden and they were blooming lovely!!!
I like the story behind the Delphinium too. The name of the flower is derived from the greek "dolphin" because of the sleek shape of the unopened spike. They grow upto 7 feet tall. Traditionally white or marvelous purple blue like this beauty. I loved the way mine were luminous and captured the light whatever the time of day or weather.
Delphinium is the flower for July birthdays, and it is when they are at their very best. They symbolise an open heart, and the essence of divine qualitites, as well as lightness and fun (I get the sense of that as they bob around in the breeze.)
Delphinium is still used as a powerful herbal medicine, ( in the wrong quantities they are poisonus). They are said to cure mental, reproductive and respiratory problems, they also can repel pests from other flowers. The American Indians used them to soothe the scorpion sting. They are hard working, many talented, openhearted, joyful and beautiful, just like us ; ).
Blue flowers hold special significance in the language of flowers and the coolness is a perfect antidote to our overstimulated lives.
The tradition of a bride wearing something blue is attached to the concept of loyality. It is a regal colour and symbolises trustworthiness and is often use das a colour of uniforms. Winner's receive blue ribbons etc. Blue, the colour of a soothing sky or ocean. It is easy to see why we send blue flowers for calming beauty, peace and tranquility.
